Baragon is a daikaiju first featured in the 1965 Toho-produced film Frankenstein vs. Baragon (a.k.a Frankenstein Conquers the World). Baragon is a four-legged reptile with a horn on his head and large ears. His main weapon is a heat ray that he can fire from his mouth and was used to disintegrate rock and dirt, allowing him to burrow through the ground. In addition to his burrowing heat beam he can jump very high. Baragon is not to be confused with the Gamera series kaiju Barugon, despite some similarities between the two creatures.

Barugon

Barugon (バルゴン) is a monster featured in the second Gamera film, 1966's Gamera vs. Barugon, (better known as "War of the Monsters" stateside.) Barugon is not to be confused with the similarly named Toho Kaiju Baragon. The similarity in name is probably a coincidence, as katakana only offers a limited number of three syllable combinations. They are both similar to ground-like dinosaurs.

Unlike his “brother” Sanda, the Brown Gargantua, Gaira was a vicious kaiju that actually fed upon human flesh. However, Gaira dwelled in the sea, where humans were in short supply, so Gaira soon began to attack ships and devouring the crews. He later turned to attacking cities along Japan’s coast, but disliking the sun, attacked only when it was cloudy, retreating to the sea whenever the sun emerged. Tired of the Green Gargantua's attacks on their country, the JSDF decided to lure Gaira into a trap, nearly killing the monster with an electrified like and Maser Cannons. However, Sanda, the Brown Gargantua, surprisingly arrived and saved Gaira, but when the human-liking Sanda discovered that Gaila had been eating humans as his main diet, the Brown Gargantua attacked him, forcing the Green Gargantua to retreat to Tokyo. Now in Tokyo, Gaira began to attack the city, but Sanda soon arrived and the two engaged in a fierce battle in the city streets. The battle eventually moved out to the sea, where a volcano engulfed both Gargantuas.

It was one of five Gamera films to be featured as episodes of movie-mocking television show Mystery Science Theater 3000; the show notably focused on Gamera's apparent gymnastic skills for humor.

The film is copyrighted in Japan because Kadokawa inherited the rights from Daiei. However, US law does not recognize this inheritance of the rights so under US law there is no recognized intellectual property owner successor to Daiei, and so the film is in the public domain within the US.[citation needed]

Generally regarded as female by English-speaking audiences, she is a giant lepidopteran with characteristics both of butterflies and of moths. The name "Mothra" is the suffixion of "-ra" (a common last syllable in kaiju names) to "moth"; since the Japanese language does not have dental fricatives, it is approximated "Mosura" in Japanese. In the American dubbing of Mothra vs. Godzilla, Mothra is also referred to as the Thing.
